Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo (2001, Candelwick Press), paperback, ages 9-12, 192 p.
I attended an author's presentation by Kate DiCamillo in Cedar Rapids, Iowa last fall, and bought her book there. If only I'd known then how much I'd enjoy Because of Winn-Dixie! It's clear why this book was nominated for a Newbery.

The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis (1994, HarperCollins), Paperback Boxed Set edition.
The complete series about the magical wonderland of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Horse and His Boy; The Magician's Nephew; and The Last Battle. I loved this series as a child, and even more as an adult. Our children now ask for these again and again--lots of adventure, interesting characters, magical settings, and deep spiritual messages true to Judeo-Christian values. If you've not had the special privilege of reading these books, please don't wait any longer.

Deadline, by Randy Alcorn (1994, Multnomah Books), adult fiction.
This spell-binding page turner kept me reading right through Christmas baking! Rated in the top ten for Christian fiction for several months after its release, and for good reason. If you're looking for strong Christian fiction that you can't put down, pick up this book by Randy Alcorn.

My Life as a Smashed Burrito With Extra Hot Sauce, by Bill Myers (1993, Word), paperback, 128p.
This is the first book in Bill Myers' wildly popular series, "The Incredible Worlds of Wally McDoogle." My oldest son at 7 years old loved these books so much that he didn't settle for being "read to," he took them to bed with him and read ahead--on his own. He still does that with subsequent purchases. The first book has a Christian message woven skillfully through it, while subsequent books are a little shallow--but all are hilariously funny. Good series, good gift books.

Trapped at Haunted Canyon, by Joan Rawlins Biggar (1998, Concordia), paperback, 160p.
This is the fourth book in the "Megan Parnell Mystery Series" by author and teacher Joan Rawlins Biggar, and I like it for my personal interest in desert settings, Native American artifacts, and mystery adventure stories. Biggar weaves interesting facts of nature and history through all her books; author-prepared lesson booklets are even available from the publisher. Other titles in this series: Missing on Castaway Island, Mystery at Camp Galena, Trouble in Yakima Valley, and Trapped at Haunted Canyon. Geared for 10-14 year olds, this series makes a great gift!
